Resting in the Lord's Sovereignty
2 Chronicles 14:7 (NKJV)
Therefore, he said to Judah, 'Let us build these cities and make walls around them, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us, because we have sought the LORD our God; we have sought Him, and He has given us rest on every side.' So they built and prospered.
Context Behind the Verse
King Asa understood the strategic importance of rest. In 2 Chronicles 14, he encourages Judah to capitalize on a period of peace God had granted them. This wasn’t a passive rest; it was an active, preparatory season. Asa knew that rest, true rest from enemies, is a gift that comes from diligently seeking the Lord. He rightly recognized that this interval was before us, meaning it was a window of opportunity provided by God’s sovereignty. The text tells us they used this time to build fortresses and strengthen their defenses because God had given them rest. This beautifully illustrates our focus: resting before a new beginning. We often treat rest as the destination, the ‘happily ever after.’ But scripturally, rest is often a catalyst and a foundation. It is the time to build internal fortresses of faith and resilience, anchoring ourselves in God’s promises before the new challenge inevitably arises. They built and prospered during the rest. May we do the same, actively engaging with God and His work in the quiet seasons, so that we are prepared to stand strong when the landscape shifts.
Prayer for the Day
Lord God, we thank You for seasons of rest, which are gifts of Your grace. Help us to use these times wisely, not in idleness, but in building up our spiritual strength and deepening our trust in You. May our obedience and growth in the quiet times prepare us for the new beginnings You have planned. Amen.
