Abounding in Love: The Thessalonian Path to Holiness
1 Thessalonians 3:12–13 (NASB)
And may the Lord cause you to increase and overflow in love for one another, and for all people, just as we also do for you; so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints.
Context Behind the Verse
In our human relationships, we often treat love like a finite resource. We carefully measure out our affection, kindness, and patience, ensuring we only give what we can afford to lose, or what we feel the recipient deserves. However, Paul prayers for a completely different kind of economy in the church at Thessalonica. He asks the Lord to make their love increase and overflow not just for their close friends or fellow believers, but for all people.
This supernatural expansion of heart is the essence of Agape. It is an unconditional benevolence that does not depend on the worthiness of the object, but on the infinite wealth of the Source. Dear God, I ask that You would expand the capacity of my heart to love others far beyond my natural abilities.
