The Heart of the Scribe
Ezra 7:10 (NASB)
"For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the LORD and to practice it, and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel."
Context Behind the Verse
In the description of Ezra, we uncover a foundational pattern for a fruitful life. Many people can identify with the first two components of this divine formula: to study and to practice. We expend significant effort and study in our professional lives and personal interests, but how much is devoted to the living and active Word of God? However, it is the order that holds the secret. The text says Ezra set his heart to study. This wasn’t passive intellectualism; it was a deep, intentional commitment to absorb the statutes of the Lord, allowing them to shape his inner man. Then comes the critical middle step: to practice it. The purpose of the study is not more knowledge, but deeper obedience. Ezra knew that he could not authentically teach what he did not first embody. His heart desired to see God glorified through his actions first, and only then would he teach others. In our modern rush, we often jump straight from superficial study to authoritative teaching. But Ezra’s prepared heart provides the quiet, enduring example. Integrity precedes influence.
Prayer for the Day
Heavenly Father, I confess my tendency to speak before I listen and to teach before I embody Your truth. Set my heart on a deep and diligent study of Your statutes. Grant me the humble obedience to practice them daily. Amen.
