The Secret of Contentment
Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV)
“Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.”
Context Behind the Verse
There is a profound difference between being satisfied with one’s lot and being content in one’s Lord. Sudden change often strips us of the comforts we once used as pillows for our souls. When the scenery of our life changes, we feel a sense of “want” a void where our security used to reside. However, the Christian’s peace is not a captive to his environment. It is a “learned” grace, a holy habit of the heart that finds its sufficiency in the presence of God rather than the abundance of things.
To start over is to discover that while everything else is mutable, Christ is the “Same yesterday, today, and forever.” Contentment is the realization that if we have God, we have lost nothing of eternal value. Even in the bareness of a new and difficult beginning, there is a sweetness to be found when we stop mourning what was and start embracing Him who is. He has said, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee,” and in that promise, every lack is filled.
Prayer for the Day
O Lord, my Soul’s Portion, help me to find my satisfaction in Thee alone. When the world about me shifts and changes, keep my heart anchored in Thy unchanging love. May I be content with what I have, knowing that I have Thee. Amen.
