The Lord’s Command: Courage in the New Chapter

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified nor dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Moving forward through pain often feels like being forced into a new and frightening chapter we did not choose. When Moses died, Joshua faced an overwhelming task: leading millions into a land filled with adversaries. The fog of grief for his mentor must have been thick, the burden of leadership immense. It is in precisely this moment of vulnerability that God speaks. His word is not a gentle suggestion to try his best, but a command: Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified nor dismayed. This command is rooted not in Joshua’s strength, but in God’s ownership of the future. The same God who commanded light into existence now commands courage into our suffering. When physical or mental pain commands our attention, terrifying us with potential outcomes, we must remember that God’s presence precedes our destination. The LORD your God is with you wherever you go. We are not wandering aimlessly; we are being escorted. Finding strength to move forward does not require us to feel brave; it requires us to obey the one who has promised to lead us through the valley.

Dear Lord, we bring our anxieties and our very real fears to You, acknowledging how small we feel in the face of our pain. Please quiet the noise of our dismay and help us to hear Your command to be courageous. Strengthen our steps today, trusting that Your presence moves with us into this difficult new chapter. Amen.
