Brotherly Care: Standing with Others in Their Distress
Obadiah 1:12 (NIV)
"You should not have looked down on your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoiced over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boasted so much in the day of their trouble."
Context Behind the Verse
The short prophecy of Obadiah carries a solemn warning to the nation of Edom for standing aloof and gloating when their distant relatives in Judah suffered calamity. Edom failed in the fundamental duty of brotherly love and service. Instead of offering relief, aid, or sympathy during a time of crisis, they chose apathy and pride. God took notice, reminding His people that turning a blind eye to a neighbor’s suffering is a serious failure of love.
To serve others genuinely, we must cultivate a heart that grieves with those who grieve and rejoices with those who rejoice. Service requires us to draw near to people in their moments of weakness and trouble rather than standing at a distance. When we choose compassion over indifference, we reflect the heart of Christ, who drew near to us in our deepest need.
Prayer for the Day
Merciful God, keep my heart tender and responsive to the sorrows of my brothers and sisters. Preserve me from pride, indifference, or the temptation to stand at a distance when others are suffering. Teach me to step forward with humility, offering genuine help, comfort, and presence in times of trouble. Amen.
