Sustaining One Another in Times of Weakness
Exodus 17:12 (NIV)
When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up, one on one side, one on the other, so that his hands remained steady till sunset.
Context Behind the Verse
During the battle at Rephidim, Israel’s success depended on Moses holding up the staff of God. Yet as the day wore on, Moses grew physically exhausted. Rather than letting him struggle alone or criticizing his weakness, Aaron and Hur stepped alongside him, brought him a stone to sit on, and physically held up his hands until the sun went down.
This powerful image reminds us that no one is meant to walk the Christian life alone not even the strongest leaders. We all experience moments of fatigue, doubt, and overwhelming burden where our spiritual hands grow heavy. Serving one another means recognizing when a brother or sister is weary and stepping in to hold up their arms through prayer, encouragement, and practical help. It means placing a solid stone of support under someone who is faltering, rather than expecting them to press on unaided. When we carry one another’s burdens in this way, we fulfill the law of Christ and ensure that the whole community stands firm together.
Prayer for the Day
Father, thank You for the brothers and sisters You have placed around me to hold up my hands when I am weary. Make me attentive to the exhaustion and burdens of those around me today. Give me the grace to offer practical support, faithful prayer, and gentle encouragement so that together we may stand firm in Your strength. Amen.
