Stirring Up the Gift of Opportunity
2 Timothy 1:9 (NKJV)
Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
Context Behind the Verse
A new opportunity often feels less like a blazing torch and more like the glowing embers in a brazier at pre-dawn, promising light but requiring activation. Stewardship, in this context, means recognizing that the opportunity is a ‘gift of God’ that we must actively ‘stir up.’ We wait for motivation or flawless circumstances, yet the scripture assigns us the work of prodding the flame. Why do we hesitate? Often, it is because we are paralyzed by a spirit of fear, dwelling on potential failure or our perceived inadequacy. But true stewardship rejects fear as a false counselor. We have not been given a spirit of timidity. Instead, as we activate the gift as we make the first move into that new role, project, or relationship, we are empowered. We find that we have already been equipped with power for the task, love for the people involved, and a sound mind to steward the outcome. The hand that prods the embers does not create the fire; it simply allows the inherent potential to catch the morning light.
Prayer for the Day
Sovereign Lord, You are the Giver of every good and perfect gift, and You call us into new opportunities for Your glory. We confess that we often shrink back, allowing fear to dull the potential You have placed in our hands. Grant us the humility to trust the resources You have given, power, love, and wisdom. Help us to stir up Your gifts today. Amen.
