Walking in Truth and Hospitality: The Unshakable Commandment
2 John 1:5–6 (NKJV)
"And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another. This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it."
Context Behind the Verse
The elder John writes with an urgent simplicity born of decades walking beside Christ: love is neither novel nor optional. He deliberately roots love in obedience to truth. Today, the world often separates love from commitment, imagining it as a warm feeling that comes and goes like the tide. But in the biblical economy, love is a steady, deliberate path upon which we set our feet every day. It means honoring commitments when enthusiasm wanes, speaking the truth with kindness when deception feels easier, and welcoming travelers and brethren into our personal spaces. Loving one another is keeping the steady rhythm of God’s statutes that were always designed to protect human dignity and nurture community. When we make the deliberate choice to act in obedience, putting the well-being of our brothers and sisters before our immediate preferences, we embody the unchanging message spoken from the very beginning.
Prayer for the Day
Lord, keep us steady on the ancient path of Your truth. When our feelings waver or fatigue sets in, grant us the resolve to love our companions faithfully. May our obedience to Your word bear the fragrant fruit of gentleness and unwavering loyalty. Amen.
Inspirational Quote
“What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men.”
St. Augustine
