A Brief Moment of Grace
Ezra 9:8 (NKJV)
And now for a little while grace has been shown from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a peg in His holy place, that our God may enlighten our eyes and give us a measure of revival in our bondage.
Context Behind the Verse
We often think of grace as a New Testament concept, but here in the book of Ezra, we see it beautifully manifested. The context is humble: a small remnant of Israelites has been allowed to return from Babylonian exile to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple. Ezra, the priest, is praying a prayer of corporate confession. He acknowledges their deep sin, which led to the exile, but he highlights a little while where grace has broken through.
This grace was not grand or opulent; it was a measure of revival in our bondage. It was enough grace to leave a surviving remnant, and to give them a peg (or a foothold) in God’s holy place. This is an encouraging reminder that God’s grace is often found in small, quiet mercies, especially when we are feeling the weight of our own failures or difficult circumstances. Grace may not always completely remove the bondage, but it is enough to enlighten our eyes and grant us the strength to set the next cornerstone. Do not despise the day of small things (Zechariah 4:10), for the brief moment of grace is a foretaste of the eternal restoration to come.
Prayer for the Day
Lord God, we confess that when we are overwhelmed, we often miss Your quiet mercies. Forgive us for complaining about our bondage while ignoring the grace You have shown us. Thank You for the ‘peg’ You have given us in Your holy place, and for the strength to continue rebuilding.
