Courage for the Unknown Way
Judges 3:11 (NIV)
So the land had rest for forty years, until Othniel son of Kenaz died.
Context Behind the Verse
Imagine forty years. Forty years of peace and safety, watching children grow up without the fear of invading armies. This was the precious gift God gave to Israel after they cried out to Him and were delivered by Othniel. It was a tangible, hard-won rest, not a passive laziness. This rest was a reward for faithfulness and a testament to God’s intervention. But let’s look closer. This period of quiet was before the next cycle of disobedience and judgment. It wasn’t a static ending, but a necessary intermission. It was a space to rebuild, to teach the ways of God to a new generation, to gather strength for what lay ahead. In our own lives, God offers us seasons of rest. Sometimes they come after intense struggle, and other times they are simply gifts of His grace. Let us not waste these times in complacency. Instead, let us use this sacred pause to intentionally connect with Him, to deepen our understanding of His Word, and to allow Him to truly renew our strength, knowing that a new season of life, with all its joys and challenges, is always just beyond the horizon. Let this rest be your preparation.
Prayer for the Day
Lord, we confess that often we only look for rest when we are exhausted. Help us to value the seasons of calm You provide, using them to truly honor You and grow closer to Your heart. Prepare us for the new beginnings on the horizon, allowing this quiet time to build our faith for future service. Amen.
