Standing Still at the Edge of the Sea
Exodus 14:14 (NIV)
"The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still."
Context Behind the Verse
Imagine the scene: the roar of the Red Sea before you and the thunder of Egyptian chariots behind you. In such a moment, the human heart screams for action to run, to fight, or to despair. Yet, the word given to Israel was a command that felt like a paradox: be still. This stillness is not the silence of apathy, but the quiet of absolute trust. Waiting for God’s will is often the most difficult form of obedience because it requires us to relinquish our desire for control. We want to build the bridge or steer the ship, but God often asks us to wait so that His power can be made perfect in our helplessness.
When we are obedient in the waiting, we create space for God to move in ways we never could. Our frantic efforts often produce only exhaustion, but His movement produces miracles. To be still is to acknowledge that the battle belongs to the Lord. As you face your own Red Sea today, remember that your stillness is an act of faith. He is already at work on the other side of the water, preparing a path that only His hand can open.
Prayer for the Day
Lord, I bring my anxieties and my restless heart to You today. Please grant me the courage to stand still when my surroundings feel overwhelming. Help me to trust in Your protection and to wait for Your lead with a quiet and obedient soul. Amen.
