Job’s Intercession: Serving Through Intercessory Prayer
Job 42:7, 10 (NIV)
“After the Lord had said these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, ‘I am angry with you and your two friends, because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.’ … After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before.”
Context Behind the Verse
True service often costs us our pride, particularly when called to serve those who have misunderstood or wounded us. Throughout Job’s season of intense suffering, his closest companions offered harsh judgments rather than gentle sympathy. They presumed to know God’s mind and accused Job unjustly. Yet, when the Lord confronted these companions, He directed them to Job not for condemnation, but for prayer. God instructed Job to intercede on their behalf.
It requires remarkable grace to serve someone through prayer when they have caused us deep pain. Job could have easily nursed resentment or demanded an apology before offering help. Instead, he obeyed God and lifted his voice in intercession for his companions. In that act of quiet obedience, Job embodied the essence of Christlike service: seeking the spiritual well-being of others regardless of how they have treated us.
Serving one another is not merely about outward tasks; it begins in the quiet places of the heart where we surrender our grievances. As Job lifted his friends in prayer, the Lord brought restoration to his own life. Our willingness to intercede for others opens our hearts to receive God’s healing grace.
Prayer for the Day
Heavenly Father, give me a heart that is slow to take offense and quick to pray for others. Help me to serve those around me through faithful intercession, even when it is difficult or uncomfortable. Teach me to place their spiritual good above my own desire to be right. Amen.
