Not by Might, but by Spirit
Zechariah 4:6 (NASB)
"Then he said to me, 'This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel saying, "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit," says the LORD of hosts.'"
Context Behind the Verse
Human nature leans heavily on might and power our intellect, our resources, and our connections. When we wait for God’s will, we often spend that time trying to manipulate outcomes or force doors open through sheer willpower. But the Lord’s message to Zerubbabel is a gentle corrective for every striving soul. The things that are of eternal value are not built by human franticness, but by the movement of the Holy Spirit.
Staying obedient while waiting means laying down our own weapons of might and picking up the fruit of the Spirit. It is an admission that we cannot achieve God’s purposes through our own strength. This realization brings a wonderful freedom. You do not have to carry the weight of the world or the success of the plan on your shoulders. Your role is to remain available and obedient, and the Spirit’s role is to provide the power. As you wait, let go of the need to be powerful. Be prayerful instead, and watch how the Spirit accomplishes what your might never could.
Prayer for the Day
Holy Father, I confess that I often try to solve my problems with my own strength. Teach me to rely on Your Spirit and to wait for Your power to move. May Your will be done in my life through Your grace and not my striving. Amen.
