The Origin of Love

1 John 4:19 (NKJV)

"We love Him because He first loved us."

Context Behind the Verse

All our attempts at virtue and affection are but echoes of a greater sound. We often struggle to love God more or love our neighbors better, treating these commands as heavy burdens of the will. However, John reminds us that love is not something we manufacture; it is something we respond to. Our love is a reflection, like moonlight upon a dark sea, derived entirely from the Sun of Righteousness. Before we ever thought of Him, He was thinking of us. Before we ever reached out our hands in prayer, He reached out His hands on a cross. When we find our hearts growing cold or our patience wearing thin, the remedy is not to try harder, but to return to the source. By dwelling on the immense, unmerited love of God, our hearts are naturally warmed. We become conduits of His grace, not by our own strength, but by being filled to overflowing with the love He poured out first.

Prayer for the Day

Dear Lord, thank You for being the first to love me. When my heart feels cold, please remind me of the grace You showed me while I was still far off. May Your love flow through me to everyone I meet today. Amen.
