The Cord of Three Strands: Walking Steadfastly Together
Ecclesiastes 4:9–12 (NIV)
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves, and a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Context Behind the Verse
The wisdom of the Teacher in Ecclesiastes contemplates the seasons of life under the sun. Amid the changing scenery and transient pursuits of this world, solitary isolation is proven to be hollow and perilous. On a cold night, two can lie together and stay warm; on a rough road, one can lift the partner who slips on the wet stones.
As we cross the threshold into a brand-new season, consider your companion travelers on this road of faith. Life is not meant to be walked as an isolated pilgrimage. When cold winds blow and terrain grows steep, we need brothers and sisters who will catch us before we fall, and who will permit us to lift them when their step falters. When Christ binds two believers together in mutual love and service, His presence forms the unbreakable third strand. Enter this coming week committed to walking closely with others, sharing the warmth of your fellowship and the strength of your hand.
Prayer for the Day
Almighty God, as seasons turn and the earth changes its dress, we thank You that You have not called us to walk alone. Knit our hearts together in deep humility and steadfast friendship. Help us to lift up the fallen, walk faithfully beside the weary, and keep Christ at the center of all our fellowship. Amen.
Inspirational Quote
“The fellowship of the saints is not an accidental addition to the Christian life, but the very soil in which grace grows.”
