“Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers, who have borne witness of your love before the church. If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well... We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth.”
Context Behind the Verse
In this intimate epistle, John commends Gaius for a quiet yet indispensable ministry: extending lavish hospitality and tangible provision to traveling ministers, even when they arrived as total strangers. Gaius did not preach on the frontlines of their mission, yet by opening his home and equipping them for their onward journey, he became a full partner in their labor for the Gospel.
Serving others often takes the form of practical, behind-the-scenes hospitality. When we welcome people into our lives, provide a meal, or support missionaries and community laborers, we share in the fruitful work God is doing through them. Loving the stranger and honoring those who labor in truth breaks through loneliness and knits the broader church into a single family of faith.
Prayer for the Day
Heavenly Father, broaden my capacity to welcome others with warmth and hospitality. Show me how to use my resources, my home, and my time to encourage those who are serving Your kingdom near and far. May my quiet acts of service be pleasing in Your sight. Amen.
