The Open Hand: Generosity Without a Grieving Heart
Deuteronomy 15:10–11 (NASB)
“You shall generously give to him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all your undertakings. For the poor will never cease to be in the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall freely open your hand to your brother, to your needy and poor in your land.’”
Context Behind the Verse
The law of Deuteronomy pierces through external action to address the interior motivation of the giver. God does not merely ask for material aid to be transferred to the impoverished; He commands that the giver’s heart not grieve or begrudge the gift. Genuine biblical generosity is an overflow of glad thanksgiving, recognizing that everything we possess was first received from God’s open hand.
A clenched fist reveals an anxious heart that fears scarcity, whereas an open hand testifies to trust in God’s unending provision. When we encounter poverty or hardship in our communities, we are invited to become channels of divine mercy. Serving those in need with cheerful, unreserved generosity dignifies the receiver, transforms the giver, and brings tangible hope to the suffering.
Prayer for the Day
Lord, everything I have belongs to You. Free my heart from the fear of lack and the grip of selfishness, and grant me a cheerful and open-handed spirit. Help me to give freely, joyfully, and respectfully to those who are in need around me today. Amen.
