The Mind of Christ: Humility in Our Relationships
Philippians 2:3–4 (NKJV)
Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
Context Behind the Verse
Human nature possesses a powerful, built-in bias toward self-preservation and personal promotion. Left to our own devices, we naturally evaluate every room we enter by how it can serve our ambitions, comfort, or pride. In his letter to the Philippians, Paul strikes at the very root of this self-centeredness, calling us to adopt the beautiful humility of Jesus Christ.
To esteem others better than ourselves is not to engage in false modesty or self-loathing; it is simply choosing to think of ourselves less so that we can think of others more. Agape love manifests when we deliberately step back to let someone else shine, or when we pause our busy schedules to prioritize a colleague’s urgent need. Looking out for the interests of others requires a intentional shift in our focus. As you go about your day, challenge yourself to ask a silent, transformative question in every interaction: How can I help this person succeed today?
Prayer for the Day
Lord, root out any hidden pride, selfish ambition, or vanity that lingers within my heart. Grant me the lowliness of mind that Jesus modeled so beautifully throughout His earthly ministry. Help me to genuinely value the people around me today and to look out for their needs with joyful sincerity. Amen.
