The Promise of Restoration
Joel 2:25-26 (NKJV)
“So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten... You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you; and My people shall never be put to shame.”
Context Behind the Verse
The prolonged illness and decline of a parent can feel like a season of devastating loss a time when the locusts of disease, dementia, and physical decay consume the precious remaining years. We often look back with regret on things unsaid, or mourn the vibrant life that has been slowly eroded by the advance of old age. The enemy of our souls wants us to believe that this brokenness is the final chapter of our family story.
Yet, our God is a Master of restoration. The promise given through the prophet Joel reminds us that God’s redeeming power is greater than any earthly decay. He is able to restore what has been lost, if not in the immediate physical reality, then completely in the resurrection to come. The sorrow of caregiving and the ache of grief will not have the final word. God will deal wondrously with you and your loved one, wiping away every tear and renewing all things in His perfect kingdom.
Prayer for the Day
Lord, look with mercy upon the years and memories that sickness has stolen from my parent and our family. I trust in Your great promise of ultimate restoration, believing that You will make all things new. Comfort me with the certainty that the ravages of age and illness are only temporary. Fill my heart with praise for Your wondrous works, even in the midst of my grief. Amen.
