Looking Upward in Uncertainty
2 Chronicles 20:12 (NASB)
O our God, wilt Thou not judge them? For we are powerless before this great multitude who are coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are on Thee.
Context Behind the Verse
King Jehoshaphat was surrounded. A great multitude of enemies was closing in, and the decision of how to defend his people was overwhelming. His response is one of the most refreshing admissions in Scripture: we do not know what to do. In a world that prizes decisiveness and expert opinions, admitting we are lost can feel like a failure. Yet, in God’s kingdom, this admission is the beginning of wisdom.
A difficult decision becomes an impossible one when we try to solve it with our own limited resources. Jehoshaphat shifted his gaze from the problem to the Provider. He didn’t focus on the strength of the enemy; he focused on the character of God. When you are at your wit’s end, you don’t need a more complex strategy; you need a clearer vision of the Almighty. By keeping our eyes on Him, we acknowledge that the battle belongs to the Lord. If you are standing in the middle of a multitude of choices today, start by looking up. The answer may not come immediately, but the peace of His presence will.
Prayer for the Day
O Lord, I confess that I am often overwhelmed and do not know which way to turn. I stop my striving and simply fix my eyes on You today. Guide my steps and remind me that You are greater than any challenge I face. Amen.
