The Throne of Grace and Timely Help
Hebrews 4:16 (NASB)
Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Context Behind the Verse
The writer of Hebrews offers a striking image: a throne of grace. In the ancient world, a throne was a place of judgment, power, and often fear. One did not simply approach a monarch; it was done with trembling. Yet, because we have a great High Priest, Jesus, who has passed through the heavens and is touched with the feeling of our infirmities, the nature of God’s throne has been revealed to us as one of grace. It is not a throne of condemnation, but of welcome.
Therefore, we are invited to draw near with confidence (or boldness). This confidence is not in our own worthiness, but in the character of the One who sits on the throne. We are invited to approach not as criminals, but as children. When we do, we find two things: First, we receive mercy, which is God not giving us the judgment our sins deserve. Second, we find grace to help in time of need. This grace is God giving us the strength, provision, and wisdom we do need. This help is timely it arrives exactly when it is required, not before and not after. May you draw near to that throne today.
Prayer for the Day
Lord God, we thank You that Your throne, once fearsome, is now known to us as a throne of grace through Jesus Christ. We confess our hesitance to approach You when we are struggling. Grant us the confidence to draw near to You now, that we may receive Your timely help in our hour of need.
