Sufficient Grace in Our Infirmites
2 Corinthians 12:9 (NKJV)
And He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore, most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Context Behind the Verse
The words of Christ to Paul are among the most comforting in all of Scripture. Paul had prayed repeatedly for the removal of a thorn in the flesh, a persistent messenger of Satan to buffet him. We do not know what this thorn was, but it was painful and debilitating. God’s response was not removal, but a promise: My grace is sufficient for you. This is not an empty platitude; it is a profound revelation of how God’s power operates.
Our human tendency is to hide our weaknesses, fearing they disqualify us. But God says our very weakness is the perfect vessel for His strength. In our moments of I cannot, His grace replies, I can. God’s power is made perfect, it is fully realized and manifested, not when we are strong, but when we are weak and utterly dependent on Him. Paul’s radical response was to boast in my infirmities. This means he stopped resenting his limitations and instead surrendered them, knowing that they allowed the power of Christ to rest upon him like a tent or a covering. Whatever thorn you carry today, know that His grace is already tailored to be sufficient for it.
Prayer for the Day
Lord Jesus, we confess that we resent our weaknesses and often beg You to remove them. Teach us the secret of surrender. Help us to believe that Your grace is truly sufficient for us, and that Your power is made perfect in the very things we find most difficult.
