Recognizing the Good Hand of God
Nehemiah 2:18 (NIV)
I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me. They replied, 'Let us start rebuilding.' So they began this good work.
Context Behind the Verse
Stewardship is often misunderstood as merely maintaining what we possess. But Nehemiah teaches us that a primary function of stewardship is recognizing and laying hold of the new opportunities God provides. Nehemiah was a cupbearer, far from his ancestral home, yet his heart was broken for Jerusalem. When the King offered him favor and resource a stunning new opportunity Nehemiah did not see it as a political victory or personal gain. He saw the gracious hand of my God on me. His stewardship began with humility. By acknowledging God as the source of the opportunity, he was able to inspire others. The people responded to this vision, not to Nehemiah’s personal ambition. True stewardship, when presented with a new door, does not ask, What can I get? but rather, What good work has God prepared for us here? As we face new prospects, let us first discern the ‘good hand’ that brought us here, and then, with collective strength, rise up and build for His glory.
Prayer for the Day
Gracious Father, we thank You for the new doors You open and the provisions You provide before we even ask. Grant us the humility to see Your hand in every opportunity, rather than our own skill. Give us the wisdom to steward these gifts not for our sake, but for the good work You have established. Strengthen our hands for the task. In Jesus name, Amen.
