Diligence in the Present Calling
Ecclesiastes 9:10 (NASB)
Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might; for there is no activity or planning or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol where you are going.
Context Behind the Verse
The Preacher in Ecclesiastes offers a stark reminder of our mortality, not to induce despair, but to ignite diligence. Stewardship is not just about managing resources; it is about stewarding the present moment. We often spend our energies speculating on future opportunities, wondering when ‘the big door’ will open. Yet, the scriptures direct us to the task that your hand finds to do right now. A new opportunity is not merely a change in scenery; it is a fresh demand upon our might, our focus, and our energy. If God has placed a basket in your hands to weave today, the stewardship of that moment is to weave it with all the skill and strength He provides. We are not called to half-hearted effort as we wait for something better. True faithfulness is found in applying our full wisdom and strength to the current assignment. In doing so, we honor the Giver of time and prepare ourselves for whatever subsequent service He may require.
Prayer for the Day
Lord God, Sovereign over time and season, we confess that our hearts often drift, longing for future opportunities while neglecting the present. Grant us the humility to embrace the work our hands find to do today. Give us the might and the wisdom to execute it thoroughly, as a service rendered unto You. May our diligence glorify Your name. Amen.
